The fullered blade is made of high carbon tempered steel, the brass guard is cast with the letters "CS" on the rear of the knuckle bow. In 1839 the American Minister in Paris was directed to buy 300 French Model 1829 Artillery Sabers for possible adoption by the US. In August 1840 the Ordinance Dept. purchased 500 of this pattern saber from S&K in Solingen, Prussia. Later it was made by Ames Mfg. Co. The blade is polished spring steel . The hilt solid brass. Battlefield-Pick-up Model 1796 Sword & Scabbard from General Marmaduke's Confederate Raider's.
