Vintage snowflake obsidian focal bead with a gorgeous sheen. Snowflake obsidian comes primarily from Mexico and is sometimes found in Utah in the U.S. There are really no other major localities so it is a somewhat rare and scarce stone. Snowflake obsidian is a black volcanic glass formed when molten lava cooled quickly. The whitish/grey 'spots' are balls of radiating needle shaped crystals of cristobalite (high temperature quartz). These are vintage 1950's West German pressed glass spacer beads that are a pure chalk white with gold etched ridges along the sides! West German vintage glass beads that have an AB iridescent or aurora borealis finish on them. They are handmade and I've been told that the process to make these beads is extraordinary and very time consuming. Lucite,introduced by DuPont in 1937, was cheaper to produce and therefore replaced bakelite for use in costume jewelry as early as the very early 1940's.
