Staffordshire earthenware covered sugar bowl in medium blue transfer, in the "Lady of the Lake" pattern. The pattern name is printed in blue transfer on the underside of the foot on a banner. The pattern name apparently refers to a poem of the same name by Sir Walter Scott. Although it is practically forgotten today, the poem was very popular in the early 1800s -- an early best seller. We would identify the maker of this piece as "unknown," but the theme and style of the decoration appear to put the time

Myott Staffordshire - Myott Staffordshire Bouquet, The-Maroon Sugar Bowl & Lid - Maroon & Mustard Rim, Multicolor Florals
Mid 1800s vintage hand-painted copper luster china cube sugar bowl, sadly, missing it's cover, also very shabby, with chips, cracks, and discoloration. Measures 6" long x 4" tall. It's a good early piece, made for the English market (no marks for export, although this is almost certainly from a England pottery). Staffordshire, at first we thought, but the more we look at the bright painted design, the more we think it might be Welsh! It's a charming old thing, whichever it is.
