It seems likely that all of Mozart's compositions for the horn were written for his friend Leutgeb, a distinguished horn player. The type of horn that Leutgeb played was quite different from the modern one. In Mozart's time, horns were valveless, and could only play selected notes in one key at a time. It is a measure of Leutgeb's technical mastery of the instrument that Mozart was able to write some of the very difficult music contained in the concertos included on this recording.
