John Williams (Guitar) - Albeniz: Echoes of Spain
Guitarist John Williams (no, not John Williams the soundtrack composer) adds to his fine catalog of impeccable recordings with Classic Williams: Romance of the Guitar . But this isn't just a best-of collection (though some of his greatest work is included here) since the disc contains three new recordings. Among the new tracks, Faur's Pavane is a real stunner, a short but gorgeous piece originally meant for orchestra and choir, where Williams's guitar sounds as though it always belonged there. We get

"The guitar gained international acceptance as a classical instrument only in the 20th century. In that time, however, few musicians achieved a reputation for utter mastery of the instrument equal to that of John Williams. This collection of bright moments from his illustrious career includes music from throughout the world, each highlighting an aspect of Williams' brilliance. While some of the works included in this album may be novelties for Williams, listeners will no doubt be familiar with them. The
The finest moments from 30 years and 30-plus recordings by classical guitar legend (not film composer) John Williams! Includes his gorgeous arrangements of pieces by Bach, Vivaldi, Scarlatti, De Falla, Satie, Barrios, Piazzolla, Albeniz and more—plus three new tracks recorded especially for this CD!
The great guitarist John Williams has been around the block several times with much of this music, and some of his performances sound as though he's getting a little tired of it. He plays the guitar extremely well, as always; you will never hear a better-executed performance of the Bach Chaconne, and the difficulties of the Scarlatti Sonatas hardly seem to exist for him. Some of the pieces new to his recorded repertory - -Telemann , Roncalli, Couperin--are played with all the expression I want to hear.
