Franz Joseph Haydn - 30 Celebrated String Quartet Volume 2 Music Book, scoring: String Quartet, instruments: Cello;Viola;Violin 1;Violin 2; 304 pages
These six quartets represent a high point of the Viennese classical style. In his later quartets, Haydn began traveling on the road to musical Romanticism and reached out to a large musical public. These magnificent pieces, on the other hand, have an intimacy, an elegance, and a generosity of spirit that make them very special, even given the almost unparalleled series of masterpieces that the Haydn quartets represent. Included in this set is one of the most popular of them all: The Lark , whose

Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartets Op. 76, Nos. 2-4
Franz Joseph Haydn - The Father of the Symphony is the biography of Franz Joseph Haydn. Haydn was one of the most prominent composers of the classical period, and is called by some the Father of the Symphony and Father of the String Quartet. A life-long resident of Austria, Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterhzy family on their remote estate. Isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life, he was, as he put it, forced to become

Along with the Op. 9, these pieces are the least familiar in Haydn's epic series of 68-1/2 quartets, works which established this medium as the highest and most profound form of chamber music, and maybe of all music. As with all transitional works, Op. 17 has something of the character of an experiment--Haydn is still toying with the structure and order of his movements along the way to a fully realized, perfectly balanced classical form. By the time we get to Op. 17 No. 6, he has arrived at his goal, and

Franz Joseph Haydn - Joseph Haydn - String Quartets Volume 3, Op. 17 Music Book; 140 pages
Although dedicated to a Hungarian aristocrat, Haydn's penultimate set of six quartets was actually composed for his concerts in London. The dual opus number reflects the way in which the works were published--they belong together as a group. There's a marked difference between these pieces and the Viennese quartets, Op. 64. The music is less intimate, but more forceful, with a plentiful use of folk tunes. Haydn clearly intended public performance, and they were indeed a big hit with the English concert
