Along with the Stamitz concerto, Hoffmeister's Viola Concerto is the most important audition piece for viola players. Yet, it has been handed down in a complicated source tradition, surviving in a single contemporary manuscript covered with many layers of markings. Franz Anton Hoffmeister was not only a composer of the Viennese classical era, but also a music publisher and a friend of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who dedicated one of his most beautiful string quartets to him, the ''Hoffmeister Quartet'' KV 499.
