Canada 1945 Steel Nickel MS60 Nickel was needed for the war effort, so later 1942 and 1943 dated coins were struck from brass. When tarnished, these looked like pennies, so chromium plated steel was introduced in 1944. This year is one of a two year type of George VI "nickels", and so is popular among type coin collectors.
