The aircraft was developed for the United States Army Air Corps to be one of the American fighter aircrafts during the Second World War. The P-38J Pudgy was designed by Clarence Kelly Johnson in response to the Army specification for an aircraft that can reach 20 000 feet in 6 minutes.
